Unit 13
Expressing news and views
Activity 1: Look at the picture and answer the questions

Activity 2: Read the story and answer the questions
Amina’s YouTube Science Experiment Amina loved science, especially chemical reactions. One day, she was watching YouTube videos and saw one titled:
“Make a Fire Volcano Using Soap and Vinegar!”
In the video, a boy poured vinegar, red food colour, and dish soap into a bottle, then added baking soda. The mixture bubbled up and looked like lava from a volcano. The boy shouted,
“It’s real fire! So hot!”
Amina got very excited.
“I can make a fire volcano too!”
She ran to the kitchen, took vinegar, soap, baking soda, and added pepper and oil to make it "hotter" like the video said. She mixed everything quickly. The bottle overflowed with foam and made a mess on the floor! Her little brother got scared and cried.
Her mother came and said,
“What are you doing, Amina?”
Amina said,
“I saw it on YouTube. They said it makes hot fire lava!”
Her mother sat down and explained,
“Sweetheart, that’s just a chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar. It creates carbon dioxide gas, not fire. The video was not true science. You must always ask your teacher or check your science book.”
At school the next day, Amina told her teacher what had happened. The teacher said,
“YouTube can show good science, but we must understand the real chemical reaction behind it. Science is not magic — it’s about facts and safety.”
From that day, Amina still loved science — but now, she always asked questions, read her books, and never believed every YouTube video without checking.
Science Note:
Baking soda + vinegar = chemical reaction that makes carbon dioxide gas, foam, and bubbles.
It looks exciting but is not hot, and it’s not real fire.
Moral of the Story:
Not every science experiment on YouTube is true. Always understand the chemical reaction and ask your teacher before trying it.
What subject does Amina love?
What happened when Amina added extra ingredients like oil and pepper?
What did Amina do at school the next day?
What two main ingredients caused the reaction in Amina’s experiment?
What kind of reaction makes bubbles and foam in the experiment
What should pupils do before trying science experiments from the internet?
What did the video claim the experiment would create?

Activity 5: Learn how to use "since" and "for"
Both "since" and "for" are used to talk about time. They help us say how long something has been happening, especially with the Present Perfect Tense (like I have lived...).
1. Since
We use since to show the starting point—when something began. It tells us from a specific time in the past until now.
Examples:
- I have lived in Dar es Salaam since 2019.
- She has worked on the school magazine since Monday.
- We have known each other since Standard Four.
Use "since" with:
- Years (2010, 2022)
- Months (January, June)
- Days (Monday, Sunday)
- Specific times (8 o’clock, last week, last year)
2. For
We use for to show the length of time something has happened. It tells us how long something has lasted.
Examples:
- I have lived in Mwanza for five years.
- She has watched the show for two hours.
- They have worked for a long time.
Use "for" with:
- Minutes (10 minutes)
- Hours (2 hours)
- Days (3 days)
- Months (6 months)
- Years (many years)
- A long time / a short time
3. Summary Table
| Word | Shows What? | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Since | Starting time | I have studied since Tuesday. |
| For | Duration (how long) | I have studied for 3 days. |
✅ Use "since" when you can name the time it started. ✅ Use "for" when you can count how long.
